This photo is taken from the bathtub in my bedroom (😂) with St Michael’s Mount in the background. I feel like she’s happy being able to see the sea! I thought about lining the sails but I’m so glad I didn’t, I love how the light comes through.

I kept the palette soft and layered in texture — tiles, marble, wood, brass — which gives the space warmth and depth.

There’s 2 kinds of rattan, a touch of brass, some warm terracotta… and then I’ve mixed in a few patterns, I’m obsessed with this chocolate spotted jug with the delicate print of my GP and J Baker lampshade.
Also… I’ve had this chest of drawers for years. It came painted in this soft blue, but I keep thinking about stripping it back to pine 🤍

This little shower room sits up in the attic with sloping ceilings, so the layout more or less designed itself. The shower had to go where the ceiling was highest, the basin had to be narrow, and everything else squeezed in around it. Tiny rooms definitely keep you on your toes 😅
I went for pale textured tiles, penny marble on the floor, brushed brass fittings and a simple rectangular sink that’s actually surprisingly practical.
The style is what I’d call Scandi country, soft colours, clean lines and lots of texture.
It’s a good reminder that even the tiniest spaces can have loads of character and warmth when you layer materials and keep the palette calm.

14 Rattan Wall Lighting Ideas that I love for a Coastal Home

Wall Lighting Ideas for your home!

Wall lighting provides a lovely soft ambience in a bedroom, living room or hallway (make sure to use a dimmer switch with them!) and above all gives a more subtle glow than an overhead ceiling light or pendant. I tend to turn off the main light and use wall lights as an extra layer of lighting alongside table lamps.

Wall lights work well as task lights next to a bed and are great in a smaller space where there’s no room for a table lamp on the bedside table. Look out for ones with articulated or flexible arms! I like the personality and drama that wall lighting can add to a hallway where there’s often there’s not much room for furniture. Wall lighting can be used to create lovely ‘moments’ in your home by highlighting a favourite feature or artwork.

Wall lighting ideas

using wall lights

I love to layer wall lights into our lighting schemes. We have been under construction with our Airbnb project all year, consequently, we have been able to start from scratch with a lighting scheme for each room. Although It’s best to plan for wall lights at the beginning of a renovation to ensure the wiring is in the correct place, this is not always possible.

If you are not renovating, plug-in wall lights are a good solution if you don’t want to chase out your walls! We rounded up the best ones we could find here 13 Favourite Plug-in Wall Lighting Ideas if that is a better option for you!

Rattan is a great material for wall lights, adding texture, warmth and a coastal charm. Here are 14 of my favourite rattan wall lights from budget to luxe!

all the links!

  1. We have these beautiful brass wall lights with rattan shades at The Georgian Flat, and they look fab! They are plug-in but I had to include them here.
  2. Wicker Scalloped Wall Light. A well-priced budget wall light.
  3. The flexible wall arm makes this a great option for next to a bed – we have these in our Attic bedroom. It’s the Phoebe Flexible Wall Arm in antique brass with an 18cm pendant shade in natural rattan.
  4. This coastal conch shape and darker rattan wall light is so good!
  5. I love the warmth of this more traditional coloured rattan wall light. This shape is great for narrow spaces like hallways.
  6. A fabulous budget option which is fully dimmable (essential!) Also available in brass. Black Wall Light with Rattan Shade.
  7. A great option for a hallway as it sits flush to the wall. The Athena Wall Light with its shell-inspired scalloped shade is a lovely whimsical nod to the coast, and it casts a softly diffused upward light.
  8. A wall light with a swing arm is such a good idea. These are a great budget option – I could see them being used in a kid’s or teen’s bedroom – super cool!
  9. A couple of rattan shade options (9 + 10) – I have used both! This one, in light rattan, comes in lots of different sizes for wall lighting, from 9cm to 20cm diameter.
  10. This darker rattan shade is great quality and an absolute bargain!
  11. A sister to (7), this Athena Wall Light with scalloped shade casts a diffused downward light and is on a lovely tall brass plate.
  12. This sconce has the rattan wound around the plate part of the wall light rather than the shade. It’s subtle and still feels coastal. Hector Wall Light
  13. I love the brass border detail on the rattan shade here, it looks super considered and belies its high street price! These would look fab next to a bed.
  14. This is a such a pretty raffia shaded wall light – gorgeous in a coastal cottage bedroom

Lastly, for options (9), (10) and (14), I love the comprehensive choice of light fixings that you can buy here without a shade.
