Welcome to our new holiday let – A Tiny Retreat in the making!
I can’t quite believe I’m saying this, but after what feels like forever, our new holiday cottage letting, Stamping Cottage is finally coming together! Part of a beautiful Edwardian house, this little bijou retreat sits perfectly between Penzance and St Ives—close enough to explore Cornwall’s wild coastline but tucked away for total peace and quiet.
Renovation work has been a long, winding road (cue the sound of endless cups of tea and a fair few “why did we start this?” moments), but we’re on the last lap now. And let me tell you, I’m so excited to make this the cosiest, dreamiest escape.
Designed by Tin Coast Design, our interiors studio, Stamping Cottage embodies our signature English Coastal Design aesthetic—a blend of timeless character, natural textures, and layered patterns. The space itself is a modern cottage studio, complete with one bedroom, a tiny but stylish shower room, and a little kitchen. Everything you need for a relaxed getaway!
This blog post is all about the modern cottage bedroom at Stamping Cottage—a sneak peek into the cozy retreat we’re creating! There’s so much more to come! As work progresses, I’ll share more posts showing how the rest of the space is coming together—every little detail, design decision, and of course, all the sources and links!
You can take a look at this blog post to see how we’ve designed the tiny shower room with its mix of vintage charm and coastal-inspired touches.
modern cottage bedroom ideas board
I’ve been working on the design board, and I’m thrilled to share a sneak peek! Not every single element will be exactly as pictured (because, let’s be honest, sourcing the perfect vintage lamp is practically a full-time job), but this is where we’re at, and I couldn’t be happier.

Modern Cottage Bedroom Decor: Coastal Meets Cottage
The Stamping Cottage bedroom draws inspiration from modern cottage bedroom ideas using these elements:-
modern cottage bedroom key features
- A Soft, Neutral Colour Palette – Whites, creams, soft greys, and warm beiges create a light and airy feel.
- Natural Materials – Wood, linen, rattan, jute, and stone bring warmth and texture.
- Timeless & Simple Furniture – Understated pieces with classic silhouettes, often in painted or natural wood finishes.
- Layered Textures – Cozy throws, woven rugs, and a mix of soft linens for a welcoming feel.
- Shiplap or Panelled Walls – Vertical or horizontal wood paneling adds character and depth.
- Vintage & Antique Accents – Mixing old and new! Think simple country antiques and vintage lamps rather than more ornate pieces!
- Soft, Ambient Lighting – Layered wall sconces, fabric lampshades, and candlelight for a relaxed atmosphere.
I have used the above elements as a starting point and then added our own interpretation especially as Stamping Cottage is less than a 5-minute drive to the sea! It’s a modern coastal cottage bedroom!
modern cottage bedroom but make it coastal!

Cosy Stripes
Mixing textured and patterned accessories – I love mixing stripes with floral! This Breton throw has sold out but here’s something similar.

Modern Country Armchair
A loose linen cover in this lovely neutral over this high-street armchair which is big enough to curl up in!

Rustic and Woven Accents
Adding texture but keeping it calm with a large jute rug over our engineered wood floor.

Neutral + Soft
Soft Roman blinds add an informality. I like to keep blinds plain and add pattern with accessories.

Coastal Wall Lights
There’s a large window seat in Stamping Cottage’s bedroom, so I’ve added these lovely wall lights to give a coastal vibe.

Layered Lighting
These plug-in rattan lights are on either side of the bed. I really like the soft conical shape of the shade – unfortunately discontinued but here’s something similar.

Textured Accessories
The perfect modern cottage lamp which is coastal and cottagey all at the same time! Available in some other colours too.

Adding Pattern
The ceiling height is about 8 feet so I chose a semi-flush fixture. This ties in the brass, and the block print adds great character.

Block Print + Colour
When mixing patterns, vary the scale as well as the colour! Folia Cinnabar block print cushion and Indira Indigo Cushion in larger motif.

Traditional Stripes
Ticking stripes are the perfect mixer cushion for a Modern Coastal Cottage look!
modern cottage bedroom – our vision
When the renovation is complete we will add some photos!
- Soft colour – Little Greene Slake Lime is the perfect soft creamy white without grey undertones.
- Natural Materials – Jute rugs, linen upholstery, and soft wool throws make this a true bedroom retreat.
- Soft Linen & Striped Bedding – I love the look and classic charm of an English cottage bedroom – adding stripes keeps things fresh. Striped valances give a more modern cottage look. I love this one! I will keep the bedding itself crisp white as it feels more like a hotel for guests and then add more patterned and colourful throws and quilts.
- Rustic & Woven Accents – Rattan is my all time favourite material and rattan accessories are great for adding a coastal design element.
- Layered Lighting – From patterned lampshades to woven sconces, layering the lighting adds warmth and depth.
- Shiplap Panel Bedroom Walls – We have added vertical shiplap around the window seat and on the headboard wall. For added charm, we ship-lapped the ceiling too!
- A Touch of Pattern – Subtle florals, stripes, or botanical prints to add interest without overwhelming.
- Understated Cottage Charm – Thoughtful details like rustic hooks, open shelves styled with vintage accessories and a vintage chest add to the cosy coastal cottage feel.
- Clutter-Free & Functional – A balance of cosy and curated, keeping things practical yet inviting.
This space is the perfect bedroom retreat for a quiet countryside escape. And the best part? You can experience this beautifully designed space firsthand…
