I went for pale textured tiles, penny marble on the floor, brushed brass fittings and a simple rectangular sink that’s actually surprisingly practical.

Fresh, Chic, and Striped: New French Coastal Decor Pieces You’ll Love!

WELCOME SPRING WITH FRESH FRENCH COASTAL DECOR!

I know it’s still only the beginning of February but I’m really willing on Springtime down here in the far west of Cornwall. Tulips are in the shops (my absolute fave) and, as is usual at this time of year, I’m sourcing some new stock for our coastal shop.

I’ve curated a capsule collection of French coastal decor for our shop, Tin Coast Design. Available to us in limited quantities, so pre-order now for delivery by mid-April. 🇫🇷

See our full capsule collection of French coastal decor in our shop here!

I spent some time living in France, and the markets on the Ile de Ré left a lasting impression—hand-made baskets of all shapes and sizes, blue and white linens, soft-toned ceramics and terracotta pots.

This spring, I’m paying ‘hommage’ (said in a French accent lol) to these timeless French classics.

From Breton Striped ceramics to ticking feather-filled cushions, I’ve chosen pieces to help create a relaxed coastal haven no matter where you are!

French coastal Decor

See the FULL capsule collection of French coastal decor in our shop here!

French coastal décor is a relaxed but elegant vibe, mixing natural materials, soft textures and the classic French aesthetic!

get the look! six key elements of fRENCH COASTAL DECOr

1. Colour Palette

Use a soft palette of whites, creams, blues and subtle greys (sea and sky colours!) as a neutral base and then add in some beachy colour – faded navy, pale turquoise, sea green, coral or a warm light red. All these colours are typically added as a motif or a stripe on plain textiles.

I love to use neutrals and earth tones for that relaxed, elegant French vibe in my interior design schemes. Pebble and stone colours, sandy beige and light-washed wood tones give an organic coastal feel.

2. French Coastal Textiles + Natural Materials

Natural breathable fabrics are key to creating an effortless, elegant French coastal style. Use Linen, Cotton, Chambray and Canvas. Think loose-covered sofas, relaxed Roman blinds, plump feather cushions and textural throws!

  • Linen is the fabric most synonymous with French coastal décor. Use beautiful heavy-weight linens for upholstery. Its relaxed slightly crinkled look will add charm to sofas and armchairs and its gentle slubs add a lovely texture.
  • Lighter-weight linen has a fresh, airy quality, making it perfect for soft blinds and gorgeous curtains.
  • Cotton fabrics are common for cushions, as they provide a smooth, comfortable feel that’s great for lounging. They often come in light, airy weaves, or even more rustic, textured patterns.
  • A signature in French coastal fabrics, cotton cushions often feature classic nautical stripes—navy and white, soft blue and cream, or even faded red and white. These give a timeless, nautical edge without feeling too kitschy.
  • Chambray is a soft, denim-like cotton fabric (often in pale blue) which can be used in soft furnishings, offering both durability and a gentle seaside vibe.
  • Natural fibres like Seagrass, Hemp and Jute evoke the more rustic side of French coastal décor. Hemp and jute can be woven into cushions to bring lovely texture. Seagrass and natural fibre rugs bring an organic, earthy feel and a relaxed coastal look.
  • While lighter fabrics dominate in French coastal décor, wool is great for adding texture and warmth. Think knitted wool cushions and chunky throws for comfort and cosiness.
  • Wool is often found in muted tones like soft greys, light blues, or sandy neutrals that still tie back to the coastal palette but with a bit more structure.
  • Canvas or Sail Cloth is another common fabric in French coastal décor, especially for outdoor cushions or for creating slipcovers. The material is rugged, soft but also tough!

3. Stripes + Nautical Pattern

  • Classic coastal stripes are one of the most iconic motifs in French coastal décor! Stripes are a simple timeless pattern and go with everything! Play with horizontal and vertical, thick and thin stripes in blinds and cushions. Mix with plains and florals as well as rugged textures.
  • Chevron and Herringbone are less overtly nautical but can still feel coastal. They can be used to create tile patterns and wood floor designs. Look out for lovely wool upholstery fabrics featuring subtle chevron designs too.

4. Florals + Botanicals

  • Many vintage French coastal cushions feature delicate embroidery, often in coastal motifs like sea creatures, plants, or simple monograms. Embroidery adds an element of elegance and craftsmanship to an otherwise casual décor style.
  • For a French country coastal style, use fabrics with muted colours and a vintage feel. Faded lavender or soft seafoam green stitched onto a cream or beige base looks amazing!
  • I like coastal design to be subtle and not too overtly nautical. However, I do love a botanical pattern in a muted colour and I love an embroidered seashell or coral on a napkin, particularly if it’s vintage or antique.
  • We also have the best fake coral in our shop which looks amazing on a shelf or coffee table.
  • French coastal decor always incorporates fresh flowers or greenery in woven baskets or simple vases. Lavender, rosemary, or olive branches bring a touch of Provence!

5. Rattan + Wood

I love to use rattan and wicker for accent chairs and tables in our Interior Design Studio. They add a lovely, lighter, but classic coastal look. A little wicker table lamp has the same effect, we sell this darling Coconut Lamp with a white jute shade in our shop. I have this rattan tray on a coffee table and it’s the perfect French coastal accessory.

I love washed reclaimed wood that looks a bit weathered (see the perfect reclaimed wood stool here!), but dark wood antiques can look amazing next to light linens.

We sell a fab deconstructed Linen armchair with the best French coastal vibe.

Add in some painted wood pieces, particularly if they are vintage and especially in muted tones.

6. Relaxed Coastal

French coastal decor doesn’t sacrifice style for comfort. It’s all about creating a casual, laid-back vibe that still feels intentional and curated. It feels effortless yet chic, embracing natural fabrics and textures while maintaining a sophisticated charm. The vibe is relaxed, but there’s an attention to detail!

Let’s take a closer look at what’s arriving this season!
